Just out of courestity how many believe if you are Kukkiwon certified you must follow all WTF rules and regulation.

Is there a difference between the two and if so what are they in your mind?

Good question!!

In my mind it's very clear that the Kukkiwon is the education/certification body and the WTF is the sport competition body.

However, I am Kukkiwon certified and do follow WTF rules and regulations. That's because I am a member of the WTF MNA in my country so I follow the Kukkiwon and WTF rules.

To be honest, there isn't much of a difference as the two rarely overlap (poomsae criteria is one recent area as I believe the two have differences in how they want them performed).

I would think that the two even though not interchangeable are thought to be anyway. It seems that the KKW certified's want to follow the WTF guidelines.

Yes, I think this is the general perception. It seems kind of odd to me that the KKW poomsae curriculum and the WTF are now diverging---I guess that's pretty good evidence that they are in fact distinct bodies---but the truth is, as Matt says, there's a sense among people with KKW cert that they are kind of part of the WTF `orbit'.

I wonder how much of that thinking grows out of the original WTF/ITF split. Because of the history, WTF is to South Korea as ITF is to North Korea, is how some people view it---maybe not so much in North America, obviously (General Choi wound up in Canada, and we Canadians know very well we're not North Koreans!) but I have the sense that that's not an uncommon view in South Korea. Since KKW is the South Korean `guardian' of the TKD curriculum, that would probably lead to a lot of people thinking of the two S. Korean orgs as largely overlapping (and the fact that they shared premises in the KKW building would just reinforce that picture).

How is this divergence in poomsae performance going to play out?? Now you have to learn KKW technique and a separate WTF version? Why did this happen?

Hopefully the following links will work and you will see the difference between the two.

Kukkiwon is the World Tae Kwon Do Headquarters (WTF)http://www.kukkiwon.or.kr/english/index.jsp

Kukkiwon supports two Tae Kwondo organizations: the World Tae Kwon Do Federation and the Korea Tae Kwon Do Association (KTA)http://www.wtf.org/

Lou, thanks very much for those links. So does this mean that the divergence is between the WTF tournament guidelines and the KTA formal curriculum requirements?

I've heard this, but can anyone actually list specific differences in the way the WTF want a poomsae done against the Kukkiwon way? Feel free to go in to as much depth as you want, detail every move for every pattern if you have the time/patience :) I can remember up to Pyongwon (I used to know Sipjin, but that's a long distant memory now, I'll relearn it soon no doubt).

Are they differences in eye contact/speed or more detailed differences such as differing stances/movements.
