Our system teaches them (handgun and long gun). They are taught at third dan level for us but we often dabble with them with the lower students to give them a taste of things to come. Survival has no age to my mind I'll teach anybody who want's to learn them. However it would be a good idea to bring a firearms safety class in conjunction. Disarming does you no good if you then shoot yourself with the thing or an innocent bystander.
