If you are a new student at our school but have studied previously, we allow you to wear the rank you have earned. We did not promote you to that rank so we do not feel that it is appropriate for us to take the rank that you earned away from you. However, you would still have to learn the differences. Additionally, if you bring an expertise from another style, we would love to get your feedback/perspective on things so that we could all improve.
Personally, if I were to study in a new art, I would respect the school's master if he/she wanted to start me over as a beginner...like a previous poster wrote, it is humbling.
