Interesting perspective from a Chinese student who is in Japan attending college. She was a TKD student previously, but has been training in karate since arriving in Japan. She has gained some interesting insights from her training, not just about karate.

"HOW COME? You look so small!" A lot of my friends cannot understand why a small girl has such a "violent" hobby. But for me, karate is far from just a martial art; it is the essence of Japanese culture, a unique thinking style, and on a higher level, a profound living philosophy.
Before I came to Japan, I never imagined I would study karate as an exchange student. When I arrived in Tokyo two years ago, I had already studied tae kwon do for three years and my goal was to get a black belt as an amateur.
However, there was no tae kwon do club on campus or nearby so I joined the karate club.
