Can you give any advice please?

Hi everyone,

Im new to the forum this is my first post.:boing1:

anyway, i will be competing in my first ever competition next week, the Kenpo World Championships. I am confident with my form and the black belts at my school are all really pleased with it, however being my first time in the arena I would like to ask those who have competed what to expect on the day, and also I am slightly nervous of people watching me perform and would like to know how you block out spectators to put in my best performance.

thanks in advance :)

My best advice is no matter what, win, loose, great form, stage fright.....no matter what enjoy the moment have fun and don't be concerned about placing. As for performance dig deep find the energy and let it all out. Hold nothing back. Oh and did I mention have fun.

No advice other than supporting what was already given.
By the way Welcome to Martial Talk, pop on over to the "meet-n-greet" section of the forum, introduce and tell us more about yourself. We love greeting new members! :wavey:

Enjoy the moment. Do the form for yourslef not for the judges or the crowd.
Put your hart into making the form yours and know that it is a fight not a dance.
best of luck and skill

JT hit the nail on the head! Use this as a learning experience. Its always a nervous time, but do your best to stay relaxed, go out and do your best. Even if you don't place, as I said, its a great chance to learn, by watching everyone, not only in forms but also during the sparring.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Mike

Not that this will help, but here's what I do ...

Know the form inside and out. Know at least one application for every movement, this brings the form to life within your mind. Know it, see it, do it. Focus, focus, focus. Visualize the fight (it was mentioned earlier that it is not a dance), know the fight, fight the fight. If you see it and focus on what you are seeing in your mind, the judges will see it.

Now, if you can do this at the rank you hold, you will be way, way ahead of the curve.

Good luck, make sure you have fun. You're only doing this for you, be satisfied that you did your best. Nobody can ask for anything more than that.

Go to more tournaments. Participate, work in front of crowds or in public, like a park. Learn to tune out anything but your form and the area you are working in.

Project intent with your movements, do not simply walk through the form. The difference between 39th place and top ten is projecting your 'experience' in the form.

Best of luck!

Enjoy yourself, it will show in your performance.

Rob

All the previous advice should be enough to help you succeed. The only thing I can add, and this may not work, but try picturing the judges in thong underwear. Kenpo judges in thong underwear. Like I said, it may not work.

14 Kenpo's point about visualisation is very important. If you do not see the opponent how can the judges be expected to?

In kata performance, as opposed to sparring, that is central. Without visualisation it is not martial arts, it is dance.

thank you for all your kind support, i will let you all know how i do.

becoming more nervous all the time, i know ill be fine when im out there and if i never done it i would regret it.and theres a dinner dance the night after, so itll be a great weekend :)

anyway thanks again for your support.

hi everyone!!!

thats my first competition over and done with, i finished 3rd for my individual form which is all i done, delighted to have gone out there and got through it with no problems, getting a place was a massive bonus, still cant believe it, all back to hard training now.

thats given me a massive boost in self confidence, i believe the sky's the limit for me now but also for everybody who competed, its a v. hard thing to do, especially your first competition, i understand how it feels now and know what to expect.

well done to all the winners!!!!!!

Congratulations!!!! To place your first time out is incredible. :asian:

BTW, wanted to say belatedly, TShC's advice really packed a wallop:

Enjoy the moment. Do the form for yourslef not for the judges or the crowd.
Put your hart into making the form yours and know that it is a fight not a dance.
