2025 Goals

1. Start a new martial art that is not Korean (maybe Wing Chun or Isshin Ryu).
2. Compete in a powerlifting competition.
3. Get a definite answer to what those drones over NJ are.

Keep on swimming
Keep on swimming
Keep on swimming

Other than that, hoping to get into some serious Sun Taijiquan training and focusing a lot more on Wing Chun

Oh and maybe retire… jury is still out on that one

Be a better man, husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. I know, it seems a bit trite, but it effects so many other things.

Almost 70 and I would like to keep the mindset that I can still progress in my MA and tennis.

Those drones are crazy. The media has tried to convince people it's all conspiracy theories, or people not knowing what planes look like.

But I've got a friend who got a phd in political psychology, is quite literally the person I know that'd be least likely sucked into any conspiracy theories, lives over an hour from the nearest airport, reporting seeing these drones. He's taken videos of them and shared them. I live less than a mile from an airport and know what low flying airplanes look like, i also know what helicopters look like, and it looks like none of those. It's also way more 'traffic' than any air traffic controller would allow in an area.

Four explanations come to mind:

1: Its the government doing some sort of surveillance that they don't want us to know. I don't think this is likely, simply because when they realized the press it was getting (and they did try to downplay it) they would've stopped it,or figured out anither option for what they're doing.

2: it's a foreign government getting information. This makes sense in terms of motive, they're gathering some sort of intel on bases in the area. But it's a widespread enough area that confuses he-i'd expect it to only be by the military bases.

3: it's a private citizen/private company. But I cant see what their goal would be or how they'd be stopping the govt from figuring out the origin and ordering a cease and desist.

4: it's aliens. Which may or may not even exist. And I'd completely write off this option, if it weren't for multiple congressional hearings over the last year acknowledging their existence. So that's my guess.

HAPPY NEW YEAR MARTIAL TALK!

What are your goals for 2025? Here's mine:
  1. Continue to commit to my new diet and exercise plans that I started midyear last year.
  2. Compete in at least 2 BJJ tournaments and win at least 1 match.
  3. Study for and complete my 4th Dan test in Taekwondo.

Continue yoga, more solo keiko, and slow down.

From Arnie’s Pump Club-

Research suggests that simultaneously working on several goals is a critical mistake and that less is more when trying to achieve resolutions or goals.
Researchers conducted experiments to understand how implementation intentions—specific “if-then” plans to achieve a goal—affect success when multiple goals are at play. Participants were asked to set and pursue various goals with specific action plans, such as “If I feel hungry, then I’ll eat a healthy snack” or “If I have time after work, then I’ll exercise.”

Fewer Goals = Higher Success Rates: Participants who focused on a single goal were significantly more likely to achieve it than those who simultaneously managed three or more goals.

Cognitive Overload: Juggling multiple goals reduced the brain’s ability to stick to implementation plans, leading to lower overall adherence.

Action Plan Dilution: The effectiveness of “if-then” planning dropped as the number of goals increased, suggesting that spreading focus diminishes clarity and execution.

First priority is to continue supporting my wife as she continues to kick cancer in its stupid face until it gets the message.

Martial arts-wise, my goal is simple: To keep showing up. My blue belt test brought to light a couple of weaknesses I'd like to shore up, and the first step to THAT is showing up. Then, gotta keep working. But that comes naturally.

Happy new year, everybody. Health, happiness, and all that jazz.

I'm going to organize all my notes on karate history.

Poetry? MA related? Obituary?

A horror story that takes place in Maine. I originally wrote a forty page story in the eighties that scared some of the people (cops) that read it. One guy’s wife read it and wouldn’t turn the hall light out outside their bedroom for a couple of days. He reminded of that about a year ago, so I decided to turn it into a book. It’s coming along pretty good.

I suspect ‘erotic fiction’ 😑

There is a romance going on between the male and female lead characters. A County Sheriff in Maine and a social media rising star
from Massachusetts. Can’t really get erotic without screwing up the storyline.

1. Work on improving myself and being a better man.

2. Achieve purple belt and continue to train in Kenpo all year.

3. Continue to exercise on my own time while practicing Kenpo at home.

If you haven't already, read HP Lovecraft's short stories.

The horror is in the unknown, and the reader fills in the rest. It's genius.

Horror stories and Maine are two of my favourite things. Our home away from home. Keep at it, Buka.

I will definitely check that out, thanks.

Lovecraft's stories are of the cosmic-horror subgenre (i.e. unspeakable and indescribable horrors, usually set in sleepy rural towns along the NE coast).

He's the author who introduced us to ineffable eldritch horrors like Cthulhu.

1. The Shadow Over Innsmouth
A creepy seaside town hiding dark secrets, with strange aquatic hybrids.

2. The Colour Out of Space
A tale of alien corruption seeping into the land and people.

3. The Whisperer in Darkness
Set in the remote Vermont hills, featuring eerie creatures and isolation.

4. Dagon
A chilling story of a sailor’s encounter with an ancient sea monster. Great for Maine’s maritime vibe.

5. The Dunwich Horror
A rural town plagued by ancient rituals and monsters.

I splurged on the hardcover collection of his stories a few years ago.

Enjoy!
And if you're looking for more reading material, check out his essay on Supernatural Horror in Literature. It references a lot of my (now) favourite authors. So I have Lovecraft to thank for introducing me to folks like M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, and Arthur Machen.
