Kevin Iole joined Cofield for a quick breakdown of the big fights at UFC 108. Somewhere between eight and 11 potential matchups went down the drain due to injury. Matchmaker Joe Silva scrambled to put together a decent card, but the local paper, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, still called it "cursed" today.
The main event with Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva, is huge for both fighters. A loss really has the victim tumbling down the UFC's light heavyweight ranks. The winner could be in line for a title shot towards the end of 2010. British fighting, ESPN U.K. and Paul Daley have a lot at stake when the knockout artist takes on Dustin Hazelett. We saw what a couple of solid wins did for Dan Hardy. Make no mistake about it, if you're British and winning you may get an extra push to the top of the rankings to benefit the UFC's international goals.
The other intriguing story is Gilbert Yvel facing Junior Dos Santos. Yvel, known for years as a dirty fighter and denied the right to fight in Nevada and California by the associated commissions, has a chance to spoil Dos Santos' run at a heavyweight title shot.
UFC 108 odds (Courtesy Venetian Resort Casino Hotel):
Thiago Silva (+170) v. Rashad Evans (-200) - Light heavyweight
Paul Daley (-115) v. Dustin Hazelett (-115) - Welterweight
Sam Stout (+220) v. Joe Lauzon (-300) - Lightweight
Duane Ludwig (+300) v. Jim Miller (-400) - Lightweight
Gilbert Yvel (+300) v. Junior Dos Santos (-400) - Heavyweight
Jacob Volkmann (+170) v. Martin Kampmann (-200) - Welterweight
Dan Lauzon (+130) v. Cole Miller (-160) - Lightweight
Ryan Jensen (+250) v. Mark Munoz (-330) - Middleweight
Jake Ellenberger (-115) v. Mike Pyle (-115) - Welterweight
John Gunderson (+180) v. Rafaello Oliviera (-220) - Lightweight
