01-02-2010 10:35 PM:Another wrestler trying to slug with a striker again reached a predictable conclusion at UFC 108. Jacob Volkmann, an accomplished NCAA grappler at the Univeristy of Minnesota, didn't attempt a single takedown for three and half minutes. He was landing effectively but with zero power. Kampmann, with seven knockouts in 16 wins, has power. After getting caught with a couple of love taps from Volkmann, Kampmann dropped his opponent with a big right. On the ground, Kampmann pounded away and then caught Volkmann with a guillotine choke. He tapped immediately at 4:03 of the first in the second of two live fights aired on Spike TV.
This was a big fight for Kampmann (16-3, 7-2 UFC), who lost his last time out in a huge upset against Paul Daley. Kampmann was on the verge of a title shot with a win that night at UFC 103. A loss here and he would've been miles away from ever sniffing a fight against Georges St. Pierre.
