aul Buentello is dying to get back in the cage. The guy has had a rough run the last two years. Buentello, a top 25 heavyweight, simply couldn't find enough fights to stay busy and more importantly make a good living. He was scheduled to fight Gilbert Yvel on Affliction 3 back in August and his sterling luck kill him again as the card was cancelled. After just two fights since Nov. of 2007, when UFC came calling with an offer, Buentello figured his luck had changed. He couldn't pass up the opportunity to jump at the possibility of three or fights a year. That wasn't something he felt Strikeforce could do for him. Buentello chose the UFC but in doing so changed his management team. He still wanted to work his former manager/trainer "Crazy" Bob Cook as his trainer but no longer his manager.
Cook had been pushing for Buentello to stay with Strikeforce. That's when the trouble began and Buentello was told he couldn't train at his home for the last eight years, American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose.

"This whole time, I've treating it as fun and games but it's business and you have to have the right people behind you," Buentello said of the management switch to Elis Pacheco. Pacheco, from the Dedos Marketing Group, has worked with Ice-T, Fat Joe and Beyonce Knowles, according to Fight! Magazine.

Buentello (27-10, 3-1 UFC) puts the blame on himself, saying the way that he moved may not have been the most professional way to do things. As a result, Buentello was forced to train in Sacramento, a three-hour drive from San Jose. He worked with AKA fighters like Bobby Southworth, Matt Major and Mike Kyle and had to cram all of his training into a shorter span up north.
Buentello, 35, is an interesting fighter for the UFC heavyweight division. He's a lot like Roy Nelson in that he's not a ripped up guy but he is an excellent striker and more importantly a volume striker. He destroyed the very highly touted Kirill Sidelnikov at Affliction 2. His opponent tomorrow at UFC 107, Stefan Struve, needs to get the fight to the ground to win it. At 6-foot-11, he's a brutal matchup once it hits the floor. If it stays on the feet, Struve has proven to be an easy guy to hit in two of his three UFC fights. Junior Dos Santos knocked him out and Denis Stojnic really tore up his face. If Buentello needs to make adjustments will the absence of Cook in his corner prove costly?
