Who is getting the flu shots?

Haven't gotten them yet; we don't have enough H1N1 vaccine here yet for anyone who is not high risk, and reading this made me realize that I forgot to get mine when I was at the doc for a sinus infection today. Poopy. My kids have had the regular one, and we will all get the H1N1 when it's available to the general public.

There are only a limited number of vaccines that do not contain thirmesol. They are generally preserved for the higher risk groups, like kids and pregnant women. I know because my wife had to get a different shot than me, so we did a lot of research on it.

The same shot will protect against multiple strains, but this year you need one extra to hit the h1n1. You can check out the CDC website for more information.

The nasal version is a live vaccine, although inactive, it can cause side effects, but it won't cause the actual flu. Just depending on the severity of the side effects, it may be LIKE having the flu. Look at the list on this link....if you get all of the side effects, it is just like having the flu, but you're not over the line medically and you technically don't have the actual virus, just side effects from the inactive strain given to you in the vaccine.

Not before Harvey Maul gets his fusion reactor, I'm afraid....

Neither of which is likely to happen before I build my submarine! :lfao:
Building a sub is relatively easy... I can think of quite a few off-the-shelf items that could easily be used and adapted.

If I draw up blueprints -- will you come through with the transporter? :D

Seriously... I got the flu shot and will get the H1N1 shot because of my kid, and because of the places I end up going for work.

My guess on why I got sick is simple: week 1, tetanus/diptheria/pertussis booster at the pediatrician's office. Week 2, flu shot at work physical. Week 3, try to break kid of sleeping with Mommy & Daddy... which means no sleep for Mommy & Daddy. Week 3 and a half, travel halfway up the East Coast, and spend 3 days in intense outdoor martial arts training. With plenty of opportunities for exposure to all sorts of stuff... Add it all up, and it's called major workout for the immune system. It failed...

I received a flu shot a few years in a row. Each flu shot seemed to give me some sort of muscle stiffness that felt like it was spread throughout my body. (It wasn't the localized kind that comes with working a muscle group too hard in class).

The stiffness felt like it was getting worse, so I stopped getting the flu shot, and focused more on taking better care of myself in the winter months (eating more fresh fruit/veggies, coupious amounts of Vitamin C, etc). I don't think I have had the shot in 4 or 5 years. I haven't gotten the flu either. I also don't have a job that requires interaction with the general public, I just have to sit in the office and fix stuff, or climb around in the lab and fix stuff. :)

What I am concerned about is getting in an airplane, because plane trips around the holidays generally make me sick. Bad air in those suckers. I'm seriously considering making the trip by car this time. Its a very long drive (12 hour minimum), but it beats getting sick over the holidays...which has happened to me too many times.

Not getting either one. No no no.
Each of the three times I had flu shots I was sick as a dog for weeks after, not going through that again.

There is no denying that immunization has been a major factor in the health of the general population. That being said I think that the medicine is far more "solid" in the prevention of some diseases than others.

Dude-submarine. not "sandwich." :lfao:

I've designed a nifty one, but it'd cost me at least $25 million that I don't have....

Transporter? Like this? :lfao:

I used to have to get a flu shot every year when I was in the Corps. First, they tell you that the flu shot cannot give you the flu. Fine. I got flu-like symptoms and felt like crap for three days afterwards, just like having the flu. I did not see an advantage there. Call it whatever you like.

Second, since I was forced to get a flu shot against my will, I swore that once I was free of that particular oath, I would never again be forced to take a flu shot. And I will not. Not now, not ever. And if ObamaCare tries to force the issue, they will be making a mistake. Like an oh-****-you-done-it-now mistake. Seriously. They come to my door, they better bring guns. Lots of 'em.

The one year that I missed the regular flu shot, I got sicker, longer than I have ever been. It was the mid-nineties, and the bug was the A Beijing flu. Symptoms persisted for about three months, and I missed weeks of work.

I'll get the regular shot, as well as the H1N1 if it's available to me. I'm not in the higher risk groups for infection, but, as an elementary teacher, I will be exposed to it.

My kids and I have been getting the flu shot for as long as I can remember, every year faithfully. Never had an issue, never gotten sick, and never a problem. We will be getting the seasonal and the H1N1 shot this year.

I look at the record of immunization and how many diseases have been knocked out or knocked on their asses. People in the third world line up in droves to take the vaccinations many in the West turn their noses up at. Vaccinations and antibiotics are almost exclusively responsible for the longevity we enjoy. Why would I/we not get a shot?

The old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, is so true.
