I'd say that's a pretty inaccurate breakdown. There's tons of circular elements in Boxing, Judo., Muay Thai and even Wing Chun and TKD. (Modern Olympic fencing is much more linear than historic fencing because competition occurs on a long narrow track, but it still contains circular elements.

Honestly, I don't know if I can think of a martial art that doesn't have both circular and linear elements. Some arts may emphasize one aspect more than another, but both are generally present. Even if you wanted to identify arts which place a strong emphasis on one more than the other, I don't think your initial list would be very on-point. (Okay, it's probably fair to say that Aikido and Hapkido emphasize the circular aspects more than the linear.)

I think when one talks about circular elements of boxing, Muay Thai and even Wing Chun one means punch or kick to back or take town from back.

I don’t think Wing Chun emphasise take downs like kenpo karate, Kajukenbo and Jiu-Jitsu does.

It depends as some have noted already..

Some arts use circular hands, linear, footwork, or circular, footwork, and linear hands..

Very few actually contain and use both circular hands, and foot work.

I'll weigh in on judo and BJJ, they are most definitely both, because both involve a great amount of circular momentum but also linear forces.. Almost every throw, sweep, break fall is a function of a circular motion, but there are also submissions like chokes, locks, and pins that utilize linear attacks.

An armbar (in judo juji gatame) is a good example (and how I learned the number 10 in Japanese (+)!) This is a linear force limb lock, but with a sort of circular hip movement. Once you lock the arm, you arc your body towards the sky and voila, you will either get your partner tap out best case, or they will be injured worst case. Hopefully that makes sense, you are forming a straight line one way, but a circle in another dimension. You can probably find an animation or video easily that shows this.

In these arts we are taught to recognize the peril of having this locked in, untrained people will often hurt themselves just trying to break free.

Agree, mostly the wrestling/grappling arts. Sometimes you're circling, sometimes going straight in, and then typically jumping back and forth.

A high school or college wrestling match is a great place to see both in action.

When I was younger and studying shotokan I always was taught linear was faster. Then in my late teen years I began watching alot of wing chun. I was a very linear fighter. After I got injured I did fma for a few years and there was lots if circular stuff in there. I learned that while linear might be faster theoretically it's not always that simple. There are guys in fma and circular styles of kung fu who are faster than my shotokan sensei was. Honestly the best fighters use both ways. Linear and circular.

look at it a little differently

Circular or linear, a function based on the theory by which a style is said to work.

How one views it is similar to the expression of light viewed as a particle or wave.
with its underlying properties containing both aspects.
Depending on the lens one uses to view it through,
it will seen as one or the other,
