One wonders if there's a necessity to updating the FX in TOS or if it was done out of pride = I can do better than that.
True by today's standards the fx are pretty cheesy but again one has to watch and remember that for the day ... they were pretty remarkable and well done with the technology they had.
Mebbe I'm a purist but I think they shouldn't be messed with. But... that's just me.
