A story that I think should be given a little more prominence, tho' it is a hard sell for the news media I suppose, is that the mortality rate amongst mature trees is sky-rocketing. I know that global warming gets the blame for everything but it is hard to resist the notion that an increase in the overall average temperature that a tree must endure has an effect on it's longevity. If the trees go, then a lot of other species, including us, are in big trouble given that, tho' many forget it, our present global ecosystem was founded and maintained by forests.

yiekes....

It takes a few minutes to cut a big tree down....
even at a replant rate of three or ten per...I don't see any relief for the situation!

(most of Europe was at one time dense forest...)
