Komusta ka and Aloha! Special thanks go out to all who attended the tribal pinoy gathering in Colorado this past weekend! A total of 18 hours was put in Saturday alone! This was a mutual Kokua (sharing) event with practitioners from several different schools and styles,
first up for the morning session was former full contact champion Louie Lagunsad who worked us to death on our stand up striking game, the funny thing is, Louie is head of securty for a nightclub, had gotten off at 3:30 am, drove 45 minutes to the venue, and didn't go to sleep until his session was over at 10:00am!
second session of the day was Kuntao Silat with Steve Gartin and Chas Clements of the denver Malabar Silat School, we worked jurus, langkas, interpretations, then empty hand against the blade, they are some of the coolest gentlemen I have ever had the opportunity to train with.
3rd up was Doce Pares with Guro Tim Mills and the guys of the Denver PIMA group, we worked Single and double stick, disarms, throws levers, and several forms to round out the training.
4th was Guro Kino Balles, of Kali Melayu and Dekiti Tirsia, who's footwork drills was close to the nail in the coffin as he drilled us late into the night.
Finally, it was yours truly doing pakal grip blade to hand translations, Harimau based leg takedowns, and bangkaw fighting application. Finally when we could no longer grip a stick we let out for the night.
Sunday was a treat as it was all devoted to continuous fight applications in Empty hands, buno, and no rules stickfighting. The bangkaw I ordered for the event arrived the wrong size 5/8ths thin, we figured what the hell we'll use em till they break, lets just say the thin rod equated to what was some of the nastiest whiplike stick hickies Ive ever seen!
Our first annual event was small, but we are fortunate to have forged new friendships, trained like madmen, and brought the beauty of the islands to a little town in the middle of america. Thanks to all!
