I'll try to keep this one on the short side:
Dean Hamer's got a good reputation behind him, so I wouldn't say he's completely bogus. Taking a bit more than a layman's interest in biology and genetics recently (Matt Ridley's "Genome" is highly recommended), I came under the impression that a genetic influence may exist and lose effect later in life, but I don't buy the 40% bit. Plus, it would hardly warrant the name "The God Gene". That's media hype. There's usually no one gene in charge of such general things.
