Ninjamom
2nd Black Belt
In addition to TKD, I study a Korean sword art called 'haidong gumdo'. The stances are taken from a very obscure, almost-cultic Korean martial art called Gicheon. Gicheon itself shows Chinese influences, but as far as I can tell, is a native korean art predating the Japanese occupation.
Anyway, the stances in Gicheon are designed to build strength and endurance before the techniques (both unarmed and with weapons) are taught. If you are interested in some really good balance and strength training through basic stances, check out the video clips shown in this Youtube collection from the Gicheon headmaster in Korea. (see all the numbered videos, labeld "6 basic poses").
My quads never worked so much as first just standing, then moving forward, in sodoh.
