I never wanted a smart phone. My wife made me get my first one about 2 years ago. I only use it for text and phone calls. I have a tablet that I use for internet, MT etc. MT was my first foray into social media, unless you count online gaming

think if you do a little research into the company itself, you’ll find it’s a little bit more nuanced then saying it’s a Chinese company .

The documentary showed two adults opening accounts with Toktik. The process involved the platform asking ‘Are you over 18?’ This is hardly reasonable safeguarding. After a few minutes they received videos which shocked then to the core but they wouldn’t say what they were viewing.

There seem to be videos on TokTik that are not suitable for humans let alone children.

You know, now I think about it, I only use my smartphone for texting services, calls and occasionally looking things up on the Interweb when my iPad isn’t to hand and taking photos/videos!

Feel it's better to educate and restrict certain things from young people until they have the ability to handle them.
Even with education and awareness, some people may never be able to handle certain things appropriately.

Society cannot always protect individuals from their own actions,
it can attempt to protect itself from the potential harm caused by the action of individuals.

Do agree,
Technology outpaced, societal adaptability, in understanding potential harm.over benefits.

I think you’re being a little disingenuous with this. I’m talking about hardcore porn, extreme violence etc being available to a person who self-declares they are over 18 years old.

That’s the assumption with an over 18s policy. But I strongly believe there are some things that should not be available to anyone, such as footage of executions of humans and animals. I had a family member who came across this sort of stuff and it deeply disturbed him to the point of acute temporary depression (and he’s a medical doctor!).

This is why we have laws which need to be enforced. Being accessible to over 18s only is a bare minimum. I stopped using FB when Meta sent a mealymouthed representative to the coroners hearing about the suicide of poor, 14yr old Molly Russell who accessed suicide pages on Facebook before taking her own life.

Yes indeed. Luckily I don’t have children, but if I did, I’d be so worried about them and ‘social’ media via smartphones. I wouldn’t be able to sleep!

Addictions per see if not bad. I would say we are all addicted to many things, but their individual importance is individual. Food, positive social feedback, intellectual stimulation, having fun etc.... things we need, and behavioural changes can be drastic if we are declined them.

That said I personally I am not using any social like like facebook, x, tiktok, snapchat and all that crap. For several reasons. First of all the conditions of their right to use and track you are unreasonable. I refuse the feed the dragons. I think kids are also not mature enough to understand the possible negative outcomes.

That said, I love phones, beeing able to search for information even when taking a poo is priceless. Beeing addicted to that isnt a bad thing.

But am not interesting in the social meda stuff. Internet forums and email is sufficient. IF I get facebook, something is wrong, then please kick me in the head.
