At your school or club how often does the BB really train, I am not talking about the ones still competing but those that help with classes? I believe a minimun of three classes a week to keep sharpe and still have that knowledge of the techniques. Do you have anything in place to make sure this happens or do they just do it without a mention of it?

I have always been a beliver that one needs to do some training to teach but I see a tend going on where B.B.'s do not believe this anymore, I have in place where mine should be training atleast two days a week but it just never works out that way for some reason.

In our Dojang BB are not permitted to go to any other classes unless they fulfill their 2 BB classes a week.

We have classes for only BB that are twice a week. BB must attend them before they are permitted to join any other classes.

BB classes are kind of fun as you get to do things in that class that you don't get in any other class. Not sure why you would not want to do them as you get more detail with the basics and get to do advanced stuff that you cannot do in regular classes as the levels are to vast between belts.

We have a black belt class on friday nights which is compulsory for lower ranking instructors (4th dan and below). Most classes in our club are run by 5th, 6th or 7th dan instructors and they can attend black belt class if they wish but its not compulsory. The 1st - 4th dan instructors also get together separately in an unofficial 'young instructors club' where they spar and discuss training techs etc.

There is one lesson on a Sunday for black belts only and two senior belts lessons a week which you have to be invited to below blue belt level

??? Do the rest of you typically only teach and not practice yourself when you lead a class?

I always get in some repetitions myself even when I am teaching. First, my execution serves to be a model for the students to follow. Secondly, I want to make sure all the students get a chance to 'feel my hands', so they know what a proper blow or block, etc, feels like when it connects to the right target area (example, the various numbing effects resulting from a firm block/strike to the correct nerve in the arm). Third, I need to stay in shape too, so why not train some at the same time as my students?

No I always workout maybe not like alot of people but I still trry to do a workout everyday of some sort. I believe even low reps help keep you sharpe and up to date with your training.

Ditto what dancingalone does. But only in our adult class when assisting or teaching, not with the kids classes. Other than that I only take my Black Belt classes.

Continued education...

Our black belts, serve only as assistance during class (demonstration purposes generally), but still train along side the class. As the primary instructor, I generally allow myself at least 30 minutes prior to class to simply run through some reps, work on hyung, etc. Also, I'm as mobile as possible in class, which outside observation allows me to partake in roughly 40% of each class.

Training should only stop when the body will no longer permit!
