This is a very thorny issue, I know, particular for some of our Trans-Atlantic cousins from the more religiously inclined parts of the USA but it is an important matter that cannot be swept under the carpet for much longer.

How can it be approached in a way that is helpful to the pupils without causing offense to the public that the schools, in the end, exist to serve?

Interesting methodology in the 'flier' link. Some usually unknown facts included about pay and types of pornography (some of which, I'd like to say, are pretty unpleasant!).

I'm not sure that that is the sort of thing that was in mind in the context of the OP article but I'm sure it could be helpful in some way to educate pupils of the 'parameters' of the industry.

Some other views from teachers and pupils on the related matter of overt/covert sexualisation of the young:

So, where do I register for Pornography Appreciation 101?

Honestly, it seems like there are some legitimate points about realistic expectations and portrayals, but I'm not certain the school is the place for it to be taught.

"To take a no-holds-barred approach to sex education has the potential to break down pupils' natural sense of reserve and to encourage casual attitudes towards sex. If we want children to view sexual intimacy as something valuable, special and worthy of respect, it needs to be addressed with modesty and restraint.
"To give lessons on pornography is to play with fire," said Mr Wells.

Hah!The assumption of Mr Wells is foolish! The unrealistic images and expectations are everywhere already. Acting like the elephant is not standing in the middle of the cocktail party is ridiculous.

it is no different than discussing the tips and trick of TV commercials, so you won't fall for the talking toilet, or know that the food in the spot is not what came out of the box....

It is the same as taking a piece of rhetoric and peeling away the layers, get past the sound bites and slogans. Then again, critical reading is also a skill no longer taught in school....

Of course, it would depend largely on the teacher on how it comes across....

Well, if not in school, where else?

I know that while I can talk with my kid about most things, the 'down under' territory makes him clamp up. The 'ask your daddy' only goes that far.....

On the other hand, a realistic view and light handed approach in the school could be eye opening for the kids.
Just a few weeks ago, the library lady explained to a couple of 15 year old gentlemen why that sex ed book was in the young adult /youth section of the library. She has people come in plenty of times who ask for "you got a book on 'youknowhat'?" to which she then has to guess as to what the what is.....I know here, down south, there are a lot of parents who do not believe in sex ed past just say no. And it is clearly not working!

How diffiult can it be for a teacher to explain that actors in porn are chosen for their looks/stamina and their dingdongs and other attributes are above average size? 25 years ago my teachers sure did not mind saying so.

Despite the internet not much has changed, kids in the 80s had their porn stashes and I am sure the same was true in the 50s and any earlier period with drawings, "tijuana bibles", paintings, literature etc.

I also hear Norwegian women start doing kegel exercises in kinder garden....

Gosh, I wish my neck of the woods was as progressive as yours is....but we have people who believe evolution should not be taught in school and that, well, not telling kids will prevent them from discovering their bits and using them....
(one fellow proudly proclaimed that they successfully eliminated masturbation in his youth home! Now how do you do that with 100% certainty?!!!)

This is certainly one of those slippery slope topics, because as we've seen from past threads on sex, many think that its the parents, not the schools, that should be educating kids. As for this subject...well, perhaps it can somehow be worked into a health/sex ed class. Of course, there would have to be some sort of course outline, which of course can determine just how graphic, how much info, etc, will be discussed.

Yes, and the giant elephant is tap dancing on the living room table and taking a dump on their couch.

Odds are this fellow did not even count himself.

:lfao:

Odds are I don't want to know what that guy is doing....the obsession with 'down town' of a bunch of boys does not lend itself to any form of comfort....While I have heard of kids leaving his facility hating his guts, nothing else ever surfaced, but a great deal of evil is done under the covers of respectability!

Indeed. A lot of shocking stories about what went on in youth homes are starting to surface around here too.

I dont really see what this would teach people. I mean, people dont look at porn so that they can create realistic expectations.

I mean, imagine spending $7 on a porno magazine, thats 200 pages of meeting each other, occasionally chatting, socializing amongst other people, going out on a date, then deciding not to pursue that kind of relationship any more? People dont get porn so that they can see something realistic. And even if they were, whats happening isnt exactly a cartoon, its real. Its just that acting is involved. Unless its fetishistic, but thats a whole other deal.

Parents are great at saying porn is bad, but it may be in the childrens best interest to know why. :)

Exactly! It's like that with everything...drinking, smoking, drugs.

Parent: "Johnny, drinking and smoking are bad. Don't ever do it!!"

Johnny: "But why Mom?"

Parent: "Because I said so..thats why!!!"

Reminds me of what some of my old martial arts instructors said to me when I'd ask about the moves in kata....Because that's the way its done!!!! LMFAO...yeah, real nice description of WHY its done like that!

It's more like

Mom: Porn is bad

Kid: <glaced eyes rolling out of his head> Can I go now?

mom: sigh......

You left out "they went over that in class already", when of course they didn't. They went over it in the cafeteria. And because there are some parents who are so afraid their children will be led astray by the truth, they let them be led astray by ignorance. And we regularly see 13 yr olds delivering their first child in our town.
