The autism world loses a giant. Dr. Bernard Rimland passed away yesterday.
Dr. Rimland worked tirelessly, upon finding the diagnosis of his own child at the age of two, to find something beyond the "refrigerator mother" theory behind autism. Beginning in the 60s, he set about over 40 year of travel, research, meetings with parents. He was head of the Autism Research Institute and I had the pleasure of meeting with him, Dr. Edelson and others in the field over an intimate dinner for a meeting of the board. He was a loving, passionate, driven man who came to know and help many families across the globe.
His work is the cornerstone of where we are in how autism is regarded, diagnosed and treated today.
This is an enormous loss for many of us who have benefitted from this one man's drive to help his son.
God bless you muchly, Bernard. Tears flow for you tonight.
