Ermak's mother, Tricia Leonard of Pleasanton, said he was visiting for the weekend and had gone to the mountain with friends dealing with issues in their lives. Rock climbing was an area in which her son found comfort, Leonard said.

Ermak, a graduate of San Ramon Valley High, lived in Danville. He was a senior at UC Santa Cruz majoring in history.
