Gov. Bush criticizes NCAA ban on FSU's nickname

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Jeb Bush criticized NCAA officials on Tuesday for their decision to penalize Florida State for using an American Indian nickname and symbols, saying they instead insulted the university and a proud Seminole Tribe of Florida.

The NCAA's finding that the school's Seminoles nickname is "hostile and offensive," instead of honoring American Indians has the opposite effect, the governor said, because the tribe supports the school's use of its name.

I think it IS insulting to pass this kind of thing without input from the tribe or those affiliated with the tribe.

Good grief. Don't people understand that if every thing that was conceivably offensive was removed there would be nothing left? As an American Indian I hardly find that offensive, there are much more offensive things than that. The NCAA deserves a good hard slap for this. They should be more concerned with enforcing drug/steroid rules and stricter codes of conduct for both players and coaches. Which is more offensive? A silly mascot dressed up as an Indian, or the athlete, participating in a nationally televised event that your young child watches in hopes of doing the same one day, getting mad and disrespecting an official?

As soon as I heard about this (as I stared at the tv not believing what I was listening to) I had to just shake my head and wonder how much more anal retentive we can get before we are classified as the "permanent pucker" society.

Can we not find issues more in need of attention???

Agreed.

The "tribal" connection folks feel with their team mascot/team name feeds the competition, boils the blood. We identify with the mascot, with the idea behind being an "Angel" an "Oriole" or whatever. We aspire to channel the ancient spirits of Red Sox (heh heh heh) and the mighty Cardinal (hahahaha) ... oh crap - does this mean PETA will start in on the insult to the animal kingdom? Will Fruit of the Loom file a class action lawsuit for libel? Where will it end, I ask you? Where will it end??????

... sheesh ...

I think it's just stupid altogether. Using a tribe's NAME isn't a racial slur or a debasement or anything like that.
Something like... "The Washington Senators"... now that is debased. <shudders> who'd want to be associated with a politican?? (brrrr...)

some of the native american here in Ariazona had a problem with the name of a moutain named squa peak the said that squa was like using the word *****

i think the whole thing is retarded :2xBird2:

i guess that excludes my alumni from future NCAA events. went to school at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK, capital of the Cherokee nation. our mascot is the NSU Redmen. the locals love the idea. the only people to find offense to such a thing are ignorant asses.

As well as the University of North Dakota and the Fighting Sioux...

I remember when I was in college (vaguely) and they changed the name of the team (Chiefs) and the logo (an "Indian" head with full headdress) to the River Hawks. We all laughed. I don't recall seeing any "River Hawks" in Lowell, Massachusetts.....ever.

Lots of pigeons though. The lowell "Rock Doves" would hav ebeen more appropriate.

We have a local team called the Highlanders. (Odd name for a team in flat central ohio,) They have a cartoonish mascot of a short stout scottish guy in a kilt, frequently with bagpipes. I haven't seen any protests by scotts around here yet.

People rarely choose names/mascots of people or critters that they don't find inspiring. we never see the FIGHTING SLIMEMOLDS or the THUNDERING ACCOUNTANTS. There are a lot of important social issues but sometimes organizations and people like to attack whats easy to attack and not what is diffical and important to tackle. This way you can look like you are working, collect a salary, and not have to make difficult decisions.

As an aside on the whole concept of political corectness. I had a patient, 5 ft tall 350 lbs in with shortness of breath ankle pain and diabetes. I suggested that she might feel better if we worked on some weight loss, (35 lbs as the initial goal loss over 1 year.) She left and shortly thereafter I received a letter reprimanding me for suggesting that she might be healthier and more comfortable with a change of diet and activity. She accused me of failing to respect her right to be heavy (she used much stronger language.) You can't make everyone happy.

"NORAD to stop using Native American names in all of their operations." So as not to possibly insult them.

jeesh. Yea, virtually annihilate their way of life, put them on reservations...

Great idea! Yep, that'll do the trick. Let's call it even.

I can just see them (whomever "Them" might be) sitting around a large table thinking this stuff up.

"Ya know, we should really do sumpin' to square up with them thar Indians. Can I say Indians?"

Uh, well, actually sir, the correct term is "Native American"

Yea, okay. Whatever. Anyway. They keep wantin' to build them casino's, and it makes us look bad if we don't let 'em. But they're gettin' upity and we need to do sumpin' else to show them Indians our support without givin' all that money. Ya know, sumpin' to quiet 'em down.

Um sir, that's Native Americans, remember?

Uh, yea. Whatever...

Hey! I got it. Let's stop using their names! That'll do it!

*Momentary dumbfounded silence* followed by a chorus of approval to keep from looking stupid because you don't get it.

Well, it's settled then. What'r we doin' for lunch? *back pats all around*

Sorry, it's just me.
