First off, I am new to the arts, looking for a spot to learn. My goal is learn proper boxing first, then onto another martial art. Not interested in competitions, although they're fun to watch.
A couple years ago, I discovered a local training center (club?) that has boxing twice a week for adults. I contacted the owner & got to come in and watch the MMA team practice. My line of thinking, meet the owner, see what's up and how hard do they train.
Well, let me tell you, I was impressed. The MMA team worked hard. Although MMA isn't my thing, I wanted to jump in and join. lol It wasn't just punches, kicks and grappling. They were doing jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, jogging around the perimeter of the mat, etc. Sort of like HIIT session.
I stayed for the whole session. I wanted to talk to the owner about their boxing class. Another guy teaches it there. Before I could ask about their boxing class, he put his hands in front of his chest (clasping them) and said I should join their No Gi BJJ class. He looked & sounded like he was begging. He made me uncomfortable with his actions. I haven't been back.
I will say this about that place. They do enter a few competitions & members have won awards so they're doing something right.
I bought a freestanding heavy weight bag. It's great! I practice with and without gloves. I asked about a 'boxing' class at a local gym. They said I needed training just to join. Plus, there's a hanging heavy weight bag outside...
Right now, that MMA club has a special for one free week. I may check it out again.

Give it a solid try. If that is all you have in your area, give it a good go. If there are other schools/gyms, audit the ones you can.
