LOW HEEL KICK / HOOK KICK COMBO

THE LOW HEEL KICK

· MAINTAIN THE ANGLE IN YOUR LEG

· THE KICK TRAVELS STRAIGHT FROM YOUR STANCE TO THE TARGET ( NO CHAMBERING OF THE LEG )

· PULL TOES BACK , TURN FOOT OUT SLIGHTLY SO AS TO MAKE GOOD CONTACT WITH HEEL

· WHEN HEEL REACHES TARGET DRIVE DOWN THROUGH THE KNEE IN A SLIGHTLY DOWNWARD DIRECTION

· MORE EXPERIENCED PEOPLE CAN ADD A SLIGHT HIP ACTION FOR GREATER POWER

· TARGET AREA IS KNEECAP OR SHIN

· WHEN TRAINING ON A KICK SHIELD ALWAYS AIM YOUR KICK TO THE CENTER LINE BUT BE AWARE IN REAL LIFE THE PERSONS LEG MAY NOT BE ON YOUR CENTERLINE ( USE WHAT EVER LEG IS CLOSEST TO HIS LEG , TRY NOT TO CROSS KICK)
· CAN ALSO BE DONE WITH A PIVOT ON THE SUPPORTING LEG TO GIVE GREATER REACH

THE HOOK KICK

· MAINTAIN THE ANGLE IN YOUR LEG

· FROM YOUR STANCE THE LEG SWINGS ACROSS WITH YOUR KNEE COMING TO THE CENTERLINE AND TURNING INWARDS SO THAT YOU CAN STRIKE WITH THE HARD PART OF YOUR SHIN

· KEEP THE ANGLE IN YOUR LEG ( DON'T STRAIGHTEN LEG )

· AT THE POINT OF IMPACT OF YOUR SHIN YOU PIVOT ON YOUR SUPPORTING LEG TRYING TO PUT YOUR WHOLE BODY MASS INTO THE KICK

· STAY LOCKED IN BODY MOVES AS ONE UNIT , INITIATE FROM THE HIPS , KEEP GUARD UP DONT DROP HANDS LIKE A THAI BOXER

· TARGET AREA IS ALL AROUND THIGH FROM KNEE TO HIP (avoid hip bone) AND FROM HIP ALL UP THE RIBCAGE AND AT THE FRONT YOU CAN KICK THE GUT ( ONLY GO FOR THE HIGHER TARGETS IF YOU HAVE CONTROL OF THE ARM AND CAN DRAG THEM DOWN INTO THE KICK , OTHERWISE JUST ATTACK THE LEGS )

· TWO WAYS OF DOING IT , FIRST ONE IS TO CUT INTO THE THIGH LIKE CHOPPING DOWN A TREE WITH AN AXE , THE SECOND IS TO DIRECT YOUR FORCE IN A MORE FORWARD DIRECTION INTO THE OPPONENTS BODY (BOTH METHODS ARE CORRECT)

HOW THEY ARE USED

THE LOW HEEL KICK IS USED TO STOP AN ATTACKER ADVANCING TOWARDS YOU , SOON AS HE STEPS INTO RANGE YOU THROW OUT THE LOW HEEL KICK TO HIS LEAD LEG.

THE HOOK KICK IS A CLOSE RANGE KICK AND IS USED WHEN THE ATTACKER IS TO CLOSE FOR LOW HEEL KICK , IT IS MOSTLY A FINISHER USED AT THE END OF A CHAIN OF TECHNIQUES ,GENERALLY YOU DON,T START OFF WITH A HOOK KICK.

USING THEM AS A COMBO

LETS SAY THE ATTACKER STEPS IN TOWARDS YOU , WHEN HE COMES INTO RANGE FIRE OFF YOUR LOW HEEL KICK AT HIS SHIN OR KNEECAP WITH YOUR CLOSEST LEG ( CLOSEST WEAPON TO CLOSEST TARGET ).

STEP DOWN WITH YOUR KICKING LEG AND THEN FOLLOW THROUGH WITH A HOOK KICK WITH YOUR OTHER LEG TO HIS SAME LEG THAT YOU JUST HIT WITH THE LOW HEEL KICK.
WE ARE INFLICTING MAXIMUM DAMAGE BY HITTING HIS SAME LEG TWICE ,JUST LIKE THE PUNCHES ,WE DONT GO HITTING ALL OVER THE PLACE WE CAUSE CUMULATIVE DAMAGE IN ONE SPOT.
YOU WILL GET A LOT OF POWER IN THE HOOK KICK BECAUSE YOU ARE BUILDING OFF THE MOMENTUM OFF THE LOW HEEL KICK.

TRAINING THE COMBO ON THE KICK SHIELDS

PARTNER IS TO HOLD THE PAD ON THE FRONT OF HIS LEG WITH THE FACE OF THE PAD ON AN ANGLE SO AS TO GET GOOD CONTACT WITH THE HEEL .
PAD HOLDER MUST HAVE GOOD BEND IN KNEE TO ABSORB IMPACT .
GRIP THE PAD IN YOUR HANDS UP NEAR THE TOP PORTION DONT HOLD ONTO THE STRAPS AT THE BACK THIS USUALLY JUST CAUSES THE PAD TO MOVE AROUND TO MUCH.
WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO IS MOVE IN WITH OUR LOW HEEL KICK AND SOON AS WE HAVE DONE THE KICK OUR PARTNER IS QUICKLY GOING TO MOVE THE PAD AROUND TO HIS OUTER THIGH SO THAT THE FACE OF THE PAD IS FLAT AND WAITING FOR THE HOOK KICK.
MAKE SURE YOUR PARTNER IS SWITCHED ON AND READY TO RE - POSITION THE PAD YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO DO A FULL POWER HOOK KICK ON HIS UNPROTECTED LEG.
TRY TO GET GOOD POWER IN BOTH KICKS AND GET ALL YOUR BODY WEIGHT INTO IT WITHOUT MAKING THEM COMMITTED MOVES ( REMEMBER THERE ARE NO COMMITTED MOVES IN WING CHUN )
THE POWER COMES FROM YOUR STANCE SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE SUNK DOWN ( TO HIGH IN YOUR STANCE WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER ) STAY RELAXED , PARTICULARLY IN THE HIPS AND GET INTO THE HABIT OF PERIODICALLY MEASURING OUT YOUR STANCE SO THAT YOUR FEET ARE IN THE RIGHT POSITION .

Interesting. In WT the "hook-kick", or low round-kick, is not used and is not considered one of the traditional kicking methods of the system...although we do train against it. It is used in Escrima and is very effective, and I have seen it used in some other WC lineages. In my opinion it's a very practical tool and I will keep it in my toolbox. How about the rest of you ? Do you use a low round or "hook-kick" as Mook described?
 
only having practised for about 1 3/4 years now i am only starting to learn to kick now, but i have seen the kick described above used by my sifu and some of the more senior students, it appears to be a very effective weapon as you say geezer
