Does your TKD school incorporate knee's and leg sweep into the curriculum and if so at what age and level do you do it?
How do you go about keeping it seperate from your sparring techs. and has it been a benefit to the school overall?

I always wanted to learn sweeps but never did.
When did everyone start to learn them?

For us we start at advance level and for those that have the matuarity to handle doing them.

1st stripe black belts are taught how to do sweeps with our left and right leg. We practice on one a life sized dummy to get the feel of how much force is needed behind the kick - instead of taking out the instructor.

so I take it that people do get hurt when they dont know what they are doing.

Sweeps are taught at green belt, but only for step sparring and self-defense applications; they are allowed in free sparring at red and black belt.

Knees are taught for step sparring and self-defense, but are never allowed in free sparring.

For my TKD students I will let them start as soon as they get some kind of control over their kicking techniques. Normally around green belt they have good enough control to start it out. I take the Ashi-waza techniques form my karate training and use those to help them out.

Knees are a standard part of our curriculum and they are taught from day 1. It helps the students with chambering. We often allow them to use them when doing freestyle sparring against other styles, it all depends on the format of the sparring.

My curriculum sounds similar to Kacey's. We start nak-bup (falling) at white belt so that by green belt when we do throws and sweeps, we can meet the mat properly.:) We don't allow sweeps or throws in free-sparring though.

Knees and elbows are taught at white belt though the student does not see a and elbow strike until Taeguek5 and a knee kick until Taeguek 7. We use take the Century Bob top off the base to practice knees but leave him on the base for elbows. We also like the leather Muary Thai pad for both knees and elbows.

Falling begins at 10th gup (White belt) and sparring takedowns begin at 9th Gup (Orange belt for us).

We start teaching take-downs (controlled) at green belt and foot sweeps (uncontrolled) at blue. It's just not a big part of the curriculum for most orgs I have been a member of. Does anyone here allow them in sparring, that is on a regular basis?

To answer the original question, yes we do - on a very limited basis. One steps and self defense only.

We just do not allow sweeps, grabbing or take downs of any kind in our sparring.

Basic SD only, but it gives them a basic understanding of how to take a fight to the ground. At which point we can introduce some ground fighting to those who wish that type of training.

We (YomChi TKD Association) allow sweeps in sparring at red and black belt.

No, foot sweeps are not taught in the tkd cirriculum. However, we have practiced knees in open class.

Now this, unlike the holds in the other thread, I'll be teaching to all the boys, which is something that I trained in but they haven't as of yet. But if I get additional students, it'll be on a case by case basis. I like the idea of those that do it relaying effective but resonably safe means to do it as I haven't gotten that far yet.
