On Monday morning I went to Ikebukuro station to catch the JR Narita Express to the airport. There was an escalator going up from the station but no escalator going down to the station. I asked the JR staff where the elevator or escalator is to get down to the station and was told there was none. So I had to carry my heavy suitcase down the 30-plus steps. How on earth would a wheelchair-bound person or a mum with a pram get down there?
Ikebukero station is just one of many stations where steps are the only way to enter the stations. If Japan is serious about diversity and tourism, access to all stations for everyone is urgently needed.
