Modern names for Buddha's origin

In his Jan. 31 letter, "The proper origins of Buddhism," Prabin Khanal writes that Buddha was born in "Nepal" and that the philosophy of Buddhism originated there.
During the lifetime of Siddhartha Gautama later known as the Buddha there was no country titled Nepal. Nor was there a separate place titled India. These are much later geographical, historical and political entities. The Buddha's human father was traditionally a king in his own right, in his own probably rather small country. Should one make claims about a religion, one must be accurate about one's information.
