Japan must get off defeatist road

Regarding the Jan. 1 article "Diplomatic retooling needed in face of China": If Japan wants to survive as a world power, it needs to get with it and fast. Huge changes in social attitudes and practices are paramount; existing conservative attitudes, underpinned by the fallacy of the need for "cultural self-protection," are self-defeating.
The Japanese need to kill their stultifying bureaucracies while encouraging efficiency and true employment policies based on performance and experience regardless of age, gender, social connections or outdated social traditions. Japan especially needs to use the expertise of well-trained women as real equals in the workforce, not just as tea-makers, and encourage them out of their skill-wasting roles.
