Examples of conformity every day

I wish I could agree with Hiroaki Sato when he challenges a New York Times columnist's conclusion that Japan is a society laid low by conformity ("Usual conformist cliches about the Japanese," Dec. 27). Unfortunately, my own experiences in this otherwise wonderful country give me pause as do, seemingly, the experiences of the Japanese themselves.
For instance, I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has looked at me strangely or even laughed at me because of the way I eat my food, arrange my desk at work, pronounce Japanese words, or even walk down the street holding hands with my husband. None of these things, individually, really bothers me, but I was reminded of them when I read Sato's plea to foreigners not to see Japan as conformist.
