12-19-2009 11:36 PM:He's called the alligator in Portuguese because of his legendary grip. MMA veteran Matt Lindland found out what it's like to be in the jaws of the gator when Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza caught him in an arm-triangle choke. Lindland held out for about 10 seconds but he had to tap to Souza, a veteran of fighting in Japan, at 4:18 of the first.
This was a great win for Jacare over a guy who's only losses have come to Vitor Belfort, Fedor Emelianenko, Quinton Jackson, Falaniko Vitale, David Terrell and Murilo Bustamante. Souza, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and his ground was excellent against Lindland (21-7), a Greco-Roman silver medal wrestler in the 1996 Olympics. just as impressive was Jacare's work on his feet. He threw punches with conviction and landed often with two and three-punch combinations.
Souza (11-2) took up jiu-jitsu at a late age, 17. Actually fought the legendary Randy Couture to a draw in a grappling match in 2006 and switched over to mixed martial arts.He lost his first career fight and then one more against Gegard Mousasi during the 2008 DREAM middleweight tournament.
His nickname Portuguese for the species of alligator in his hometown town of Manaus, Brazil.
