I don't know if our American members can access any of the BBC programmes that are put up on iPLayer but if you can then I well recommend a series that's just started called The Incredible Human Journey.
It's hosted by the rather lovely Doctor Alice Roberts and altho' it skims over things (as modern documentaries are wont to do so as not to demand 'too much' of their audience) is exactly as the title suggests .
