It started with strong opposition to tape recorders and has continued to the RIAA's current Fascist Funnies. Of course they're "doing it for the artists" even though they haven't paid them a penny from the ginormous lawsuits and have tried to reduce the money paid to musicians. They've been trying hard to eliminatewebcasting and satellite radio, but without completely killing the goose that could lay them golden eggs.
The Feds stepped hard on "Pay for Play". The recording studio business lost a big revenue stream with the rise of inexpensive computers and recording/mixing software.
Now they may be getting a clue. It won't be enough to save their obsolete broken business model. But it might be good for listeners.
