I need a BJJ Translator

I’ve been at my primary art for 27 years, I’m not likely to lose the essence of it by learning useful skills. I like to learn from anyone who has a skill set that I don’t have.

cool 👍

" I don’t say that these new styles are bad kung fu or anything like that. I always say ‘Whatever you do, I don’t want.
Whatever I do and you don’t know – that’s how we win.'”

Being exposed to different things a good way to find out, how to handle it using ones own practice to handle it with..

Only one way to find out. Find a BJJ guy and see what positions he puts you in that feel like you can do the technique.
I mean concepts that might transfer. Technique wise, I have a fair amount of joint locks I can work from positions other than standing. Locks are pretty much the same ideas of leverage and position based on human physiology, it seems to me that those concepts are ubiquitous regardless of the art or style. Now, sparring with that has some inherent limitations in that I don’t want to get broken trying those out with a guy I don’t have trust in. I don’t want to injure them, and I don’t want to be injured. I have a job that requires deft use of my hands, I have to be realistic about that because I have a mortgage. Ok real talk. My wife will kill me if that happens.

This is especially true if you spar "System A vs System B" Do this and there will be some cross pollination. There will be things where A will try to give B a "taste of his own medicine."

Sure, if I wreck a hand or a wrist it’s going to be more difficult to grapple me. If I wreck a foot or a knee, I can walk away. It’s what happens if I didn’t or couldn’t. Then in that case I need to know how best to deal with that. Currently, I would say, I don’t have the skills to deal with a skilled grappler on the ground. If I can get back to my feet that’s my happy place. I want to be competent in both situations. I don’t compete,so I would never choose to be on the ground in a fight.

Yeah, again, it’s a trust issue where I literally cannot afford to be injured practicing with youngsters who need to win. I get some of that with my buddies who trained Muay Thai or Aikido or Bagua Zhang, but the couple of trusty BJJ guys i know are Physicians ( a blue and a brown belt)who don’t have much time outside their own training schedules. That’s why Tony’s idea of a seminar geared towards strikers becoming competent with basic BJJ sounds perfect for me.

This is me and where I'm currently am. I have some good prevention ability, but I don't treat that as if it's guaranteed that I won't go on the ground. In terms of self-defense, I run into more people who take BJJ than anything else. I also run into more people who train BJJ but aren't getting formal training. I learned about those guys the hard way because I would wrestle and then these guys would try a dangerous technique. I had one guy flip over and as he was doing it landed on my leg and straighten it out. Fortunate for me my leg moved back so the hyper extension wasn't bad, but it could have been. Every since that day I pretty much treat any wrestling as someone is going to try BJJ on me and worst case scenario is that they don't have formal training and will do something stupid that gets me hurt.

If I was going to travel for it I would be up for a week long.
Thinking about it, I have to work on weekdays. But if you ever manage to travel all the way out to train here, I'd be willing to give you an all day seminar on Saturday & Sunday & invite you as my guest for the evening classes for however many weekdays you wanted to stay. The only charge would be that you have to teach me some of your best moves in return.

This bugs me. It's not like it was 25 years ago when I started BJJ. There's plenty of legitimate training available. But some people want to just play around with moves they saw online or in the UFC. Good way to get themselves or someone else hurt.

I’m guessing my best moves are “ yes ma’am you sure look skinny in that”

I would absolutely be interested. Could you give me the gym address so I could look for what’s around there for lodging etc? Then I can sell it to my training brothers. I’m certainly happy to pay you for this. I wouldn’t feel right asking this much time of you for free.

20 years ago I was not married, no kids, no mortgage. I would get down with anybody, but now I have what term “ gear fear”. I have more to lose than to gain by playing games with youngsters I don’t know. I’m looking for skilled partners I can trust with nothing to prove. That said, Accidents do happen and that’s a risk I can accept.

I teach for the love of the art. I charge for private lessons just because I have limited time. But when I have a chance to exchange knowledge with an experienced practitioner like yourself then I’m happy to just make the trade.

If you lived nearby, I’d suggest just trading our time on an hour for hour basis. But if you were to spend the plane fare and vacation time in order to come visit from the other side of the country, then I’d call it fair to make the hourly exchange rate more like 5 to 1.

(Or if you have a group of people who would like the seminar, it might be cheaper to fly me out there. I haven’t been to California in a while.)

Those guys like that and the guys that "spaz out" (frantic movement) are the worst. I sparred with one guy (striking and wrestling) and he moved like I was going to eat him. lol. No matter how slow I moved, he was full on.

Wow, I’m humbled. I would like to make one of these scenarios a reality. I will want to revisit this idea after in Spring to know about my schedule. Thank you!

Yeah, it’s easy to get injured. We are pretty fragile creatures compared to most animals.
