I lived in a couple of them, my dad had wanderlust. Born in Galesburg, lived in Rock Island, East Moline, Pekin, Morton, Deer Creek, and San Jose. San Jose being the town of 400 where I was living when reading Bruce Tegner's books on Karate. When I was 13, we moved to Denver, CO, where I spent the remainder of my childhood.
It was a different time in a different place. The Pekin, Illinois high school athletic teams were called "The Chinks." Yes, that was their official name. San Jose, Illinois is pronounced "San Joe's", not "San Ho-Zay."
Welcome, Bill. Like you, I missed my opportunity to train on Okinawa (Camp Kinser, 1990). Had a good time, though, and the Okinawans were great fun to be around if you knew a little Japanese.
