I'm focusing on keeping my hands up during sparring, but every time that I throw a punch (jab, cross, hook) the opponent blocks the shot and punches my face simultaneously.

So how am I to throw a fist without getting my nose punched?

Thanks johnnies.

The easy answer is there is no way to garantie that you are not gonna get hit.
My opinion is, hit him before he hits you.
You will get use to getting hit, and it will become second nature to you.
Eventually you will learn to block/move away from his hands.

If he blocks you, its because you are to slow, and think to much.
if he blocks the jab, follow up with you right/left, but there is no garantie that you will hit him, but as long you keep trying, he will think about his next move.

think about this:
If you hit me, i'm gonna hit you back.
If you don't hit me, i'm gonna hit you back.

Thanks comrade.

So one way that you offered was to throw a second fist to his face with your other hand right after you launched the first one (a 1-2 combination instead of a single punch), and that way the opponent wont be able to reach your face.

I'm aware of offense being part of defense, but isn’t there some technique to protect your face better when punching?

By the way, does the nose get stiffer along the way?

My nose hurt alot in the beginning. First time i got hit one the nose i heard a big cracking noise. So i thought it was broken, but the doctor said it was fine. Since then i really had no problem with my nose.

You need to punch fast and get you hand back to protect your face.
When i spar against my kroo, he is so fast that when i punch his punch will reach my face or body before mine.
Or he just get out of the way, and hit me from another angle.

Be faster than the other guy... be faster than Bruce Lee or Tommy Corothers.
It's like Lee said... when the opportunity to strike arises... I do not hit... it hits all by itself.

Setup a feint with the jab.

Go downstairs with a low kick and follow up with a punch upstairs.

Basically, mix it up, get the opponent concentrating on defence.

Counter punches almost always go to where your head was when you initiated the first punch. Make sure your head is no longer there. Footwork and head motion, you need to get off that line as you come forward. If you don't, and you attack by going straight forward your opponent always knows exactly where your head will be when you advance and he will be able to hit you.

head motion is more boxing really, you dont really need to do that in thai-boxing. Keep your guard up ALWAYS and use your footwork to stay out of their direct attack line.

When you swing your sword and try to chop your opponent's head off, how do you prevent your opponent from chopping your waist in half at the same time?

The solution in sword fight can be:

1. Contact yor sword on your opponent's sword (establish contact).
2. Slide and press your sword along your opponent's sword (you know where your opponent's sword is. You guide his sword away from your body).
3. You then use your sword to slide his neck at the same time.

The issue is most people like to skip step 1 and 2, and jump into step 3 directly.

You can apply similiar strategy in fist fight. A double same hand hook punches can solve this problem.

- You use your 1st right hook punch to guide your opponent's arm away.
- You use your 2nd right hook to punch him.

We'd have to see video. There is no answer without seeing what you are doing.
The post was from 2009, at this point this guy either quit due to concussions 13 years ago or is now a coach with three fighters fighting in Lumpinee this weekend. :D
