Reminds me of when I was a kid and one of the workers at my mother's bank asked me "Are you a black belt?" to which I told him I was not, at the time I was a green belt I think. He simply said a disinterested "Oh" and walked away.

It comes from a lack of understanding of the grading system being based upon colors (though the number for each belt is there), colors that are not uniform in order across all styles. I am a proponent of Jigaro Kano's system because it makes sense to me, but speaking in colors could confuse.
