12-12-2009 09:58 PM:About the only thing Ricardo Funch won tonight was the adoration of the media and crowd for his "slick" braided hair. Beyond that he was thrown pillar-to-pillar and post-to-post by Johny Hendricks. The former Oklahoma State wrestler couldn't score a finish but slammed, elbowed, kneed, punched and neck cranked his way to an easy unanimous decision win, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-25.
Hendricks, the NCAA wrestling champ at 165 pounds in 2005 and 2006, scored powerful slams on three occasions. By the end of the fight, Funch was really slow to rise to his feet.
"Nobody thought I had jiu-jitsu. I proved it on a good purple belt."
Funch, a Brazilian, fighting out of Gabriel Gonzaga's camp, sported a crazy braided hairdo that made him look like a mix between the third Williams sister, Medusa and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. Hendricks remarked before the fight that was exactly the best thing to look at during the faceoff at the weigh-in.
