Hi, my name is Alex and I'm preparing to reenter the world of martial arts. My father took me to Thailand as a young boy and put me in a Muay Thai camp at the age of 14. I'll never forget the all the experiences I had or all the things I learned. 10 years later, the only battle I waged against was myself, chain smoking for 10 years straight along with a extremely poor diet and other abuses to my body and well being. It's embarrassing to admit but I think the best way to introduce myself is though being honest.

Right now, I'm on my third day smoke free and I'm feeling better. I was hoping that some of you guys could give me advice on how to go about starting martial arts again. Should I immediately jump into a Muay Thai class or should I take sometime to recondition my body before doing so? I'm not very flexible and I gas out in a very short time.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone for taking the time for reading my introduction post.

Cheers.

Welcome! Sounds like you're on a good path!

You need to visit some schools. What's available in your area?

Welcome Alex, please enjoy your stay. Good luck on your training.

Thank you for your warm welcomes, Arnisador and Seasoned. Arnisador, I live in Boston. I have a Muay Thai/Traditional American Boxing school that's literally a 2 minute walk from my apartment. But this being a semi large city, I have a huge selection of schools that teach so many different styles at my disposal. I was just wondering for any beginners that may have been out of shape, did you immediately jump into a school or did you do any training or conditioning before enrolling in one? Thanks again fellas!

My experience, both personal (when I joined a BJJ school) and from watching others, is that doing the art is the best way to get conditioned for the art, especially as far as endurance is concerned. Unless the instructor disagrees, I'd say just get going!

Welcome! My experience is if you try to baby step your way into something....you'll never do it. the pre-conditioning will get boring, you'll quit, and then never step foot in a gym. best to get to a school you like. That will motivate you to train...the training will be good conditioning...then you may find the desire to do other otuside conditioning later.

best to just get somewhere and start training. A good teacher/coach will know how to get you from where you are and get you to where you want/need to be. You just have to have the desire to do it. :)

Good Luck!

Peace,
Erik

Thanks a lot everybody. Seems like the general consensus is to just jump in, so I'm going to do it. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks again!
