Not to say termination isnt impossible, depends on the political pressure, the officers history of trouble, etc.
Yep, even with good standing an officer faces termination if the political heat is on. An incident happened in my town where a deputy, swat team member, went into a local shop to get his rifle bag embroidered. The rifle accidently went off injuring the store owner causing intenal injuries. The deputy was eventually fired. The last I heard he was suing to get his job back.

Uh...and he was in a store with a loaded rifle, safety off, for what reason?

That ain't politics; it's stupidity on somebody's part, a violation of basic safety rules.

Good question...however everybody makes mistakes, not everybody looses their jobs because of them. Sometimes LEO's face different pressures depending on the local politics. Not everybody can face the possibility of either getting terminated or suspended due to a domestic incident at home or a DWI.....many people arent even mandated to tell their empolyeers of such incidents.

An accidental discharge where a bystander gets hurt though? Thats going to be nothing but bad.....

He wanted to put his initials on the gun bag.
you are definately right since he had the training to know better and did not exercise the common sense to leave the rifle at home and simply take the bag in for monograming.
