You have been in the arts a long time and are getting old when you:

find yourself always saying:
“ back when I studied”
“ I remember when “
“ Do you remember that time when”
“ Do you remember (insert name)
“my instructor would always”
“ We always did it this way”
“ you have no idea what it is to train the way we did”
“ you think this is hard you should have been there when”
“ where did all those no pad tournaments go”

add your other thoughts please

"I remember when I could do ... "

just as a variation of your #2.

But otherwise... yeah all of what you said above.

I'm a lot more flexible at nearly 50 than I was at 18. Hella stronger. Pain means a lot less to me.

About the only thing that being younger was good for was that I had hair on top of my head, I weighed a lot less, and I could run faster. Everything else is better now. Except maybe my teeth. Yeah, my teeth too.

Otherwise, being young is for the birds. I like what I got going on right now.

Being fairly new to ma (5 years in), I do find it frustrating talking to all the people who make it sound like it was so much better "back in the day", it seems almost every sentence starts with 'back in the day' at times. I also realise that that is human nature, in all my endevours (including work) the people who have done it longer always talk about how much better it was back when.......... , but personally I have to agree with Bill. Having started a bit later in life I actually find I am fitter, faster, more flexible and can take more physical punishment now than when I was in my 20's.

You know that you are truly growing old when almost everything hurts and what doesn't hurt, doesn't work right....:(:(

This is all true for me at 50-though I'd say just as flexible at 50 as at 18.....for now.....I know that I'm getting to be "less strong"-I just can't quantify it yet: I can lift as much and do as much, but it doesn't feel quite as easy as it did.....hell, I was gonna say 10 years ago, but let's call it last year.

I think I hit a lot harder than I ever have, though, and I have to be really, really careful when throwing people.....

Still have my hair, weigh a little bit more but will soon weigh what I did at 22, and never could run all that fast to begin with......I can still run all day, though.
Teeth....oooh, boy.

Ditto.

(Though the next day does seem to hurt just a little bit more, and just a little bit longer.....)

Back in the day, though,( ), tournaments were rougher, and a sankyu like you, Bill, would be competing with the shodans-that's a real learning experience right there. It's what I did-of course, I was 15, the very definition of young, dumb, etc.........:lfao:

Have a look at my post in the 'Newbie' section. Yeah, I'm old. Wanna make something of it? And I ain't no stinkin' white belt!

I have to say that when I was younger I used to make fun of the "old guys" for not recovering very fast. Now that I am getting older, I know why they were the way they were. And I am the one being asked about getting around OK.

When I was young I used to wonder why middle-aged people always seemed to be so grumpy all the time ...

...

... now I know .

Remember that line your parents used to give you about "just wait til you have kids..."? Now just change it to "just wait til you have students..."
