I found my old Tae Kwon Do booklet
It's simply titled "Tae Kwon Do - Korean Martial Art" it was published in 1969 and was written by Soo Young Cha, the father of I guy I trained with in D.C.
Of note is that it shows pictures of both a self-defense against a hair grab with a kicking counterattack and a woman defending against a shoulder grab with a throw and a caption reading "A woman student uses a self-defense technique against a shoulder grab. To utilize self-defense throws efffectively, a student must first...." It also has a picture of Cha demonstratring a kick up into the face of an attacker from the ground.
Interesting slice of Taekwondo history
