what happened to my sticks..?

We finished after some time. I took the stick he was using to pack it up and it was so weird. It was all really speckled and dented from impact but mine wasn't. It was still smooth. Shouldn't they BOTH have been dented even if all I did was block? They came from the same stock after all.
Thank you for your thoughts. I posted here in the general forum because I figured physics is physics, regardless of the style/system.
