lead hand or rear hand?

I find tha if i use a shorter weapon or the other party is unarmed using the rear hand to hold the weapon like a knife is more effective than using the lead hand. I can easily retain the weapon and clear the way before launching the attack. Almost impossible to disarm. If he use a longer weapon I just wait to counter and when opportunity comes i close in.
When im inside thats it ill be just ripping ang pumping my weapon.
But how about knife to knife or if you use stick agains knife, stick to stick?
