My first FMA instructor the a GM of an aggressive, power-based system. When we practiced, we made our movements SHOUT! I'm not talking "kiai" here, I mean we attacked first, and with POWER. The system, at least as I learned, it approached combat like a person who "wins" an argument by shouting louder than the other guy. It's simple and effective. A lot of times it works. Then you meet someone even "louder" and you have a problem.

Lateley, I've been training with some other people. They've been showing me how to stop shouting, and listen. I've never been a very good listener, but it's an appealing idea. Someone really loud gives you a powerful strike or block, and you ride the force right into the counter. It's tougher to pull off than "shouting" back, but when you get it right, ...wow! Still, if I were suddenly attacked for real, I'd probably revert to "shouting". How about you? Do you shout or listen?
