was wondering how much flips are practiced by the different ninpo/ninjitsu/utsu arts out there? i remember seeing that the genbukan practice them regularly.

Varies from dojo to dojo. Some instructors don't think they are useful. While other's teach it because it is part of the learning.
I assume Genbukan dojo's would teach it more than Bujinkan because Genbukan is more interested in the traditional ways. Meaning, Bujinkan hardly teaches it because it is not as useful, but Genbukan does because it is something the ninja needed to learn.
Though in Japan it seems to be mandatory to learn the flip.

In the Bujinkan, Ive seen it vary from dojo to dojo.

One of the things Ive noticed with training in the Bujinkan as oppsed to other styles (Non ninjutsu mind you) is that they tend to be more concerned with making the art work to fit you, as oppsed to making you work to fit the art... so if you are not capable of doing flips... say you are too heavy or too weak, they dont force you to re-shape your body to do a flip, but rather teach you to utilize techniques that dont require them... this is why an 80 year old man can learn the techniques... he doesnt have to be a physically superior specimen.

As a matter of fact, Tim B told us at a seminar a few months ago that to his day Hatsumi sensei is still able to do handsprings...

:uhyeah: There he (Kizaru) goes again! Where are those mods when we need them? Eating donuts?

They've probably been confirming the body-bag order for when a few individual finally get their asses handed to them.

Interesting, you seem to be very well informed. When was the last time you were in Japan?
Ah, I hope this isn't some sort of an attack....
No, I haven't been to Japan. Though it doesn't seem like you understand what 'seem' means. 'Seem' can mean, I believe. It is basically says, this is my opinion. I was not making a statement.
I do not know first handed if it is mandatory or not to learn flips in Bujinkan. I just said that cause it is part of the Bujinkan syllubus and I saw a couple pictures of Japanese Bujinkan doing them. In the new picture like book that Hatsumi came out with this year.

Yes you were making a statement. People would have believed what you wrote and thought that it was mandatory in Japan to learn flips.

Please be carefull about what you write and how you phrase it. If you are not really, really sure, maybe you should say nothing at all.

I live in Japan and have not seen or heard of any dojos where you have to learn how to do flips. I know many where you can learn it. But can think of none where it is part of the required areas of study.

Mmmm.....Donuts...the ultimate metsubushi!

Let's try to be a little more respectful to the mods here, okay? They've got a lot to juggle here ya know.

right, right... maybe they're out learning flips? lol lol

I have no quirk with the mods on MT. They're all cool in my book.

Flips are generally taught as an escape technique. Backflips and no handed cartwheels are the most common - but the effort and time (and the commitment) requred to execute a flip makes it a poor choice as an escape for the most part.
