12-13-2009 12:42 AM:In a welterweight battle, Jon Fitch eked out a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 decision over Mike Pierce. Fitch used his wrestling to win, taking Pierce's back twice. After Fitch fought well in the first two rounds, Pierce had Fitch in trouble in the final 30 seconds of the fight.
Pierce finally woke up and started throwing bombs as the final round came to a close. He had Fitch wobbled, but he used his wrestling to survive, attempting takedowns to hang onto Pierce.
Fitch was a -500 favorite coming into this fight, but the fight did not show that much of a disparity between the fighters. Pierce had a genuine shot to win this fight in the final round, and that just spotlights the trouble that American Kickboxing Academy fighters could continue to find themselves in if they continue to refuse to fight each other. Fitch, Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick have to take fights against lesser fighters, and they open themselves to upsets, like Josh Koscheck losing to Paulo Thiago.
