1. Not as a requirement for karate, but to graduate HS and even College, plus two places I worked offered it for the supervisor positions.

2. i've expired

3. Probably a good idea - would be a nice service to add to the curriculum and the Red Cross offers classes usually for 10 or more students.

4. Yes.

5. yes

Historically Martial Artist were Monks whom where dedicated to heal and help the weak and sick. This being said I think any Insturctor should be trained in Basic First Aid and CPR.

Myself being a Licensed Nurse I am slightly biased in this subject.

1. Yes I have been trained in first aid

2. Have not been certified in years, perhaps I will take a first aid course this semister.

3. I beleive that it is good idea, however I think it should only be taught to them by certified first aid instructors.

4. I have had instructors that were not first aid trained but handled injuries very well.

5. Yes, sadly I visit it more than most

1. No, but in a week I get my certificate for passing the course.

2. Next week

3. If the school can afford it or students are willing to take the course, then go for it. Useful skill, you could save somebodys life.

4. Not yet.

5. We are in a sports centre so the first aid consists of the centre's staff and their medical room, so we are lucky!

I've encountered every type of person who didn't know what to do, even those certified in first aid.

Yup.

This is a good thread, as a liscensed paramedic I'm also a bit biased, but everyone should learn basic first aid, not just MAist or BB's.

So it makes sense for the true MA to have knowledge of healing or at least basic first-aid. BB's should have advanced or EMT training IMO because they're capable of doing much more damage.
None of us want to actually KILL anyone but the skills we learn through the years give us that capability. Yes, discipline and training and practice (should) afford us the skill to NOT do that.. but poo-poo happens as we all know.
But I feel that having the necessary first-aid skill helps rounds out the Martial Artist.

5. Good question. Our class is held at a university's old, lesser used gymnasium. I know they have first aid kits around there somewhere, and possibly those small defibrillator devices as well. But exactly where, well, that's probably something I should check on.
