Rashad Evans had a rough first half of 2009. He was the victim of a nasty knockout at the hands of Lyoto Machida at UFC 98. He recovered a little mentally by coaching well during season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter," and coming off as the more compassionate of the two coaches. Evans said the feedback he got from fans was mostly positive. He thought Quinton "Rampage" Jackson came off as the bad guy. The only negative response he got was from his Mom, who said he needed to be nicer to Rampage (2:05 mark).

Evans spent much of the time after the show completed taping getting his mind right. In early June, as taping began he spoke about an unexplained depression before the Machida fight and even crying after the loss. He mixed things up to prep for this fight by spending time away from Jackson's Submission Fighting in Albuquerque. For the first time ever, he spent significant time in Denver training with Brendan Schaub, Shane Carwin, Eliot Marshall and Nate Marquardt along with his boxing coach Mike Winkeljohn.

He even spent Christmas away from his family in Chicago, choosing to remain isolated in the Mile High City. Now it's time to get a win. If Evans loses to Thiago Silva on Saturday he'll have gone winless in 2009.
