with a cradle on top instead of the screw on attachment?

I need something to stabilize my 300mm lense at ball games, but since I switch from landscape to portrait so much, I can't use the one you screw on the bottom...I am liable to do a Curly on a bystander and whack somebody in the head.

You will still need a screw-on attachment to keep the camera secure. Look for one with a ball pivot that will allow you to quickly shift between portrait and landscape. My Benro does that for me easily but you won't need a carbon-fiber tripod for a ball game. :)

I was more thinking in terms of like that thing they used for muskets back in the day, just cradle the lens, still holding the camera.

Couldn't you use a lens collar that opens and closes easily? Just loosen the collar, switch from portrait to landscape, and retighten. Or even better, keep it slightly loose, and you've achieved the cradle you are looking for.
