Takumakai Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu, effective?

I've got a mate who does Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu, and full heartedly believes it's effective, but says he could never spar with me because "of the nature of the moves", that if he spars with me he'll break my arms and the like. Now, I've heard the old "No, we can't full contact spar because if we do, people die" stuff from other people, then seen them get the **** beat out of them in a real fight. Is Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu any different? What are your opinions?
